Augmented Reality RangeFinder (ARRF) — Privacy Policy
Thanks for using ARRF (Augmented Reality Range Finder)! We built ARRF to help you see your surroundings more clearly, and we want you to know exactly what happens with your data. Short version: your stuff stays on your phone wherever possible, and we tell you plainly about the few places it doesn't.
- No accounts. You never sign up or log in.
- No ads. None, ever.
- We don't sell your data. Not to anyone.
- The camera stays on your device. It powers the live AR view; nothing is recorded or uploaded.
- Waypoints and settings live on your device. We don't have a server holding them.
- A few trusted services help the app work: Mapbox (maps and buildings), a weather service, Google Play (subscription payments), and Unity (the engine ARRF is built with, which collects device and hardware statistics). Details below.
Safety first
ARRF is an awareness-only, estimate-only tool. It is never a safety device. Every range, distance, and overlay it shows is an estimate. Don't rely on ARRF for any decision where an error could cause injury, damage, or legal trouble. Safety first, safety then teamwork.
Who we are
ARRF is made by Lighthouse CodeLabs LLC, an independent studio in Mississippi, USA (also known as Tecknowlogist). In this policy, "we," "us," and "our" mean Lighthouse CodeLabs LLC. You can reach us anytime at LighthouseCodelabs@gmail.com.
What ARRF uses on your device, and why
| What | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | The live augmented reality view (range rings, reticle, overlays). | Processed live on your device. Not recorded, saved, or uploaded. |
| Device location (GPS) | Showing the map, placing waypoints, and calculating range estimates. | Used on your device. The map and weather features send location-related information to the providers described below. |
| Compass and motion sensors | Knowing which way you're facing and how the phone is tilted, for AR alignment and estimates. | Used on your device only. |
| Waypoints | Remembering places you mark. | Stored locally on your device. We don't receive them. |
| Settings (for example height and north calibration, units) | Remembering your preferences. | Stored locally on your device. |
| Subscription status | Unlocking subscription features, including for a short time offline. | Cached locally on your device (see "Subscription" below). |
Android will ask for your permission before ARRF can use the camera or your location. You can change these permissions anytime in your device settings. Some features won't work without them.
Third-party services
ARRF relies on a small number of outside services. When the app talks to them, they receive some information, as described here. Each has its own privacy policy, which governs what they do with it.
Mapbox — maps and building data
ARRF loads map tiles (vector and raster) and building data from Mapbox. To get the right tiles, your device sends Mapbox information about the area being viewed (location and map viewport), along with your IP address, as happens with any internet request. That can reveal your approximate location to Mapbox. Mapbox privacy policy: mapbox.com/legal/privacy.
Weather — current weather and pressure
To show current weather and barometric pressure, ARRF requests data from MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, api.met.no). Weather data: MET Norway, CC BY 4.0. MET Norway privacy policy: met.no/en/about-us/privacy. The request includes your location, rounded to about 1 km (two decimal places), and your IP address. Weather is on by default. You can turn it off anytime in Settings, under About, next to the MET Norway attribution.
Google Play — subscription payments
Subscriptions are purchased through Google Play Billing (ARRF uses Unity In-App Purchasing to connect to it). Google handles the payment. We never see your card number or other payment details; we only learn whether a subscription is active. Google privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy.
Unity — the app engine
ARRF is built with Unity. Unity's engine collects device and hardware statistics (such as device model, operating system, and hardware capabilities), and Unity Analytics collects basic app usage and device information. On the Unity plan we use, this collection is built into the engine and can't be turned off by us or by you inside the app. This information goes to Unity Technologies, not to us. Unity privacy policy: unity.com/legal/privacy-policy.
Google Play Services for AR (ARCore)
This application runs on Google Play Services for AR (ARCore), which is provided by Google and governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
Subscription
- What you get: the Buildings awareness overlay and long-range estimates.
- Price: $4.99 per year through Google Play (local prices and taxes may vary).
- Free trial: 3 days. To get the trial, you start the subscription in Google Play; if you don't cancel before the trial ends, Google Play charges the yearly price and the subscription renews automatically each year. One free trial per Google account.
- Cancel anytime in the Google Play Store app: Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
- Offline: your subscription status is cached locally on your device, so subscription features keep working for up to 7 days without a connection.
What we don't do
- We don't require or offer accounts.
- We don't show ads or use advertising IDs for ads.
- We don't sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
- We don't record or upload your camera feed.
- We don't run our own servers that store your location, waypoints, or settings.
Children
ARRF is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll help.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your waypoints, settings, and cached subscription status are stored only on your device. You can remove them anytime by uninstalling ARRF (or clearing the app's storage in Android settings). Because we don't have accounts or our own user database, there's nothing on our side to delete. Information received by Mapbox, the weather provider, Google, or Unity is handled under their own retention policies; see their privacy policies linked above. Questions? Email us.
Security
We keep data on your device wherever we can, and the app's connections to outside services use encrypted HTTPS. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but keeping things local means there's much less to protect.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, privacy laws such as the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) may give you rights to access, correct, delete, or object to the use of your personal information, and to not be discriminated against for using those rights. We don't sell personal information. Since we don't keep user data on our own systems, most requests are best handled by uninstalling the app or by contacting the third-party services above. You're always welcome to email us and we'll help however we can.
Changes to this policy
If we change how ARRF handles data, we'll update this page and the effective date at the top. For significant changes, we'll also note them in the app's release notes on Google Play. Continuing to use ARRF after an update means the updated policy applies.
